8:00 AM to 11:40 AM.
We operated 3 stations under K2DJ: 40M SSB by W2SKY, 20M SSB by K2OU and Echolink by N2JAC. Only one HF station will be used for SCR points. Our primary goal is to provide an enjoyable experience that enhances listening, radio communication, geographic and science skills. A secondary goal is to instill a knowledge and interest in amateur radio.Six 6th grade classes participated. Each class was divided into 3 subgroups and each subgroup was rotated through 3 activities. All activities were in the school library.

1. Orientation to Radio: (15 minutes)
- Explain that's going on
- Explain simplex communications
- Hand out copy of the phonetic alphabet
- Rehearse a QSO using a dummy PTT microphone
- Student fills out name tag
2. On the Air: (15 minutes)
- Join one of 3 stations that is engaged in a QSO (40M, 20M EchoLink)
- Assist each student to communicate on the air
- Exchange: names, locations, favorite sport or similar information
- Record QSO information with operator assistance
3. QSO Debrief (15 minutes)
- Discuss the QSO information exchanged
- Locate the QTH on a map and discuss how the radio wave got there
- Fill out a QSL card
- Return to class roomPlanning details:
- HF equipment provided by W2SKY, K2OU and maybe W2JAT
- EchoLink operated and provided by N2JAC
- setup antennas and transmission lines 3 PM of the previous day
- class selection and schedule determined by 6th grade acadmey
- 5 minute orientation delivered to each class several days prior to the event
- plan for minimum of 7 radio coaches:
- Time keeper and escort between class and library
- Orientation activity - minimum 1 coach
- On the Air activity - one coach at each station (3)
- Debrief activity - minimum 1 coach
- Floating coaches - minimum 1 coach to assist as required
